I always was taught in school that it was a holiday to honor Presidents Washington and Lincoln. But according to Wikipedia, that bill never passed congress. Except where states rule otherwise, it IS officially "Washington's Birthday" even though it never actually falls on Washington's Birthday, February 22. I find this fascinating.
