“We oppose privatizing public jobs and services.”

From the Republican Party Platform on business and economic development:

“We strongly support Iowa’s Right to Work laws and call for a passage of a national Right to Work law.”

From the Republican Party Platform on agriculture:

“We believe that preservation of the family farm, primary producers of produce, crops and livestock, is vital to the economic condition of our communities, state and nation. Family farms should be allowed to operate as free, independent, responsible producers and not be encumbered by onerous regulations.”

From the Democratic Platform on agriculture and environment, labor, economy and commerce:

“We support industrial hemp production.”

“We support green public transportation.”

“We support cap and trade on carbon dioxide emissions; fines on excess.”

“We support covering agriculture workers by health and safety statutes.”

A party platform is a compiled list of goals and ideals that each party strives for and believes in. It is also the standard for each party’s candidates to live up to. Who develops these platforms? Your neighbors, whether down the street or across the state, voluntarily gather together with their respected party first at a county convention, then at a congressional district convention and finally at their party’s state convention to discuss the platform, suggest changes or additions, vote on these proposals and confirm the final product as their official party platform. But it all starts at the local level, so the party platoform is a product of everyday people like you and their beliefs for the direction of our state and nation.

Some interesting contrasts between the official Iowa Republican Party Platform and the official Iowa Democratic Party Platform from the opening comments are as follows:

From the Republican Platform:

“The Republicans of Iowa still believe that the United States of America is a special place, blessed by our Creator. We believe in the same hopes, dreams, principles and values of the founding fathers. We will continue to uphold the principles of individual rights and responsibilities. Adhere to traditional moral standards, a strong national defense, a free enterprise system and respect for the sanctity of human life. It is in the same spirit as the founding fathers that the patriotic citizens of Iowa join together to help ensure that these principles, values, hopes and dreams are preserved for our children and our children’s children.”

From the Democratic Platform:

“All Americans have a stake in local, national and global economic systems that provide first and foremost for the basic human needs: nourishment, shelter, health, employment and education. The answer to governmental fiscal problems lies in a strong economy founded upon broadly based prosperity. An equitable and wide distribution of wealth and a free and fairly compensated labor force expands our economy and creates a healthier society. Market forces alone often do not serve the common good.”

To start, I need to address what is currently taking place in our country and in Iowa. Our White House, Senate, and Congress are currently controlled by Progressive Democrats. As is the Iowa Governorship, the Iowa Senate, and the Iowa House of Representatives. Progressives are much further to the left than Liberal Democrats. Their agenda focuses on more Government control of every facet of the American economy and on Americans’ lives. It believes that those who work hard and save money should be taxed to pay for those who do not – redistribution. It believes that in all situations, the government knows what is best and right and will move accordingly with no regard to the voices of American citizens. Progressive Democrats believed that Government should control Americans’ health care and it used bribes, blackmail, back room deals, and arm twisting to pass the Health Care bill despite 6 months of hearing Americans speak out against this bill. They refused to listen. Progressive Democrats spend our tax payer dollars to bail out big businesses that are in favor or in bed with the big government. They spend ‘stimulus’ dollars to reward the states and counties of favored politicians. They have refused to come up with a federal budget until after the November elections, because they don’t want us to know how truly bad America’s financial situation is.

Progressive Democrats believe that all areas of our lives should be regulated by the EPA and is pushing to enact the Cap and Trade bill which would increase utility costs, tax all industry, tax all trucking services, tax and penalize farmers – thus increasing the cost of all products we buy. It would regulate all home sales and purchases – increasing the cost of purchasing a home and decreasing your chance of selling your home. It is a hidden tax on all Americans in all income levels and only lines the pockets of the elite few that are currently in control.

Progressive Democrats support, and are supported by, Unions. They want to eliminate American’s choice to join a Union or not to join. This is illustrated in the fact that Unions are excluded from all the regulations in the newly passed Health bill. And by the fact that “to remove Iowa’s ‘Right to Work” status” is one of the items on the Iowa Democrats Platform (set of goals).

Progressive Democrats are working hard to enact an Amnesty bill – giving more than 10 million illegals automatic citizenship. They give lip service to sending more troops and dollars to protect our boarders – but in fact have created new regulation for our Border Control making it harder and more dangerous for them to do their job. American is at war on our borders with Mexico. American citizens are at risk every day. And the President refuses to help. The Federal government is suing the State of Arizona for an immigration law that mirrors the federal law which federal authorities refuse to enforce.

The Federal government is attempting to put a 6 month freeze on all oil drilling. This will put 10’s of thousands of people out of work and on our unemployment list at a time when official unemployment figures are just under 10% and real unemployment figures are close to 17%. Alabama fought back and the courts shot down the Federal directive for the freeze. In fact the Federal government has forced this into court 2 times and twice been shot down. Now they are trying to figure out a way to “go around the official process” to enact this shutdown.

So, currently, the White House and his administration is in a legal war with two of our states – Arizona and Alabama – attempting to take away “States rights”.

And currently there are 13 states suing the Federal Government over the unconstitutional control given to them in the Health bill.

Never has the a White House and it’s Administration been so at odds with the will of the 50 states and the of American Citizens.

And now you are thinking – “so, the Republicans weren’t that much better when they were in control at the Federal and State levels. They spent too much money, added new federal and state controls, didn’t take care of the illegals problem”. And I would say that you are right.

But I have good news. Americans across the country are speaking out. They are demanding fiscal responsibility, limited government and our constitutional freedoms. Americans have expressed a general distrust of politicians in both parties.

The Republican Party is listening

I have just returned from the Iowa Republican State Convention where I was able to meet the candidates for state offices and hear what they have to say. I am very happy to say, here in Iowa, we have a great line up of candidates on the Republican Party. Branstad may not have been our first choice to run for governor (again), but if we are able to elect all of the other candidates listed below, I think they will work hard to hold him to conservative values. And I think they will work hard to keep Iowans informed.

Governor — Terry Branstad and his running mate Kim Reynolds are in a great position to beat Progressive liberal Governor Culver

Secretary of State – Matt Schultz promises to strengthen Iowa’s voting regulations to ensure there is no voter fraud in Iowa (look at the fiasco in our neighboring state, Minnesota), and to enforce those laws. Matt is a grassroots candidate.

Attorney General – Brenna Findley is a fireball of energy and a fireball on protecting our state and individual rights. She is ready and willing to take on the Federal government and the Iowa government in any and all of their unconstitutional mandates, regulations, and taxation. When she says she will fight for Iowans – she means it.

State Auditor – Dave Vaudt is an incumbent in this office. He is called “Iowa Taxpayer Watch Dog” . He travels the state to anywhere he can get people to listen, to put on a power point presentation on Iowa’s budget. He works hard to have Iowans know everything there is to know about how our state is spending our tax dollars. And right now it is not a pretty picture. His goal is to keep Iowans informed and to keep the government honest.

State Treasurer – Dave Jamison is another grassroots candidate. He is determined to make the state show an honest budget – no game playing – hiding money here, robbing from this fund to pay that fund ; creative book keeping that hides the fact that Iowa is over budget and in debt. He will work with State Auditor Dave Vaudt to keep Iowans informed and to hold the state to it’s spending level limits stated in the Iowa Constitution.

Secretary of Agriculture – Bill Northey is an incumbent who has long worked hard for Iowa farmers and all aspects of the Iowa agriculture industry.

US Senator – Chuck Grassley has proven that he will listen to Iowa voters. Last year he held town hall meetings where he didn’t just talk – tell us what he wanted to do. He let us talk, and listened to what we wanted him to do. That is the kind of true “representative” politician we need.

5th District Congressman – Steve King is on the top 10 hit list for Democrats, and for obvious reasons. He stands up strong and vocal to defend the Constitution and to defend our rights. He is our watch dog – letting us know what is happening in Washington. And he says it as it is. He is one of the true good guys in politics, and we are blessed to have him representing our 5th district. Just recently he spearheaded legislation that will force a vote to repeal the Heath Care bill. When the democrats passed the Health Care bill, they by passed the required voting process. This will force Congressmen to vote up or down and to let Americans know their true views on this bill.

State Senator – David Johnson has been instrumental in fighting back union control of our state. In defending Iowa’s “right to work” status. He is a watch dog on over reaching legislation, taxation and spending. He is located right here in our county and is willing to listen to us.

State Representative – Royd Chambers also has been instrumental in the fight to hold off Unions and to defend Iowa’s ‘Right to Work’ status. He keeps us informed on the State budget and on proposed legislation. He is a strong voice for Iowan values.

State Representative – Jeff Smith is running for the office previously held by retiring Mike Mays. Jeff speaks out for limited government, limited spending, and up holding the Constitution of Iowa and of the United States. He knows the peoples of this area and will stand up for our values, for our beliefs, for our businesses and for our workforce.

So you can see, the Republican Party is changing. No more establishment politicians – saying one thing to get elected, then doing something entirely different when in office. These candidates are energized to “Take Back Iowa” and to “Take Back America” . They are everyday people willing to run for office because they want to Stand Up for freedom. Stand up for the Constitution. Stand up for US - We the People – who are the employers of all politicians.

I invite you to look at the Iowa republicans Platform (statement of beliefs and goals) at: http://www.iowagop.org/site/c.ruIWKbMYIvF/b.5647735/k.A17D/RPI_Platform.htm

And compare it with the Iowa Democrats Platform at : http://iowademocrats.org/docs/callbook.pdf You will have to go about 2/3 down on this site to find the platform. .

This November’s election is more important than any in recent history. It will determine the direction our country goes. The future of America.

Do we want to become like European countries? Closer and closer to socalisium . More control given to (or taken by) the President of the United States.

Or do we want a return to our Constitutional origins. To personal responsibility, to personal freedom, to property rights, to small- limited government, to fair taxation.

Answer: It is our contention that it is the duty and responsibility of every Christian to vote and to vote for leaders who promote Christian principles. God is most certainly in control, but that does not mean we should do nothing to further His will. We are commanded to pray for our leaders (1 Timothy 2:1-4). In terms of politics and leadership, there is evidence in Scripture that God has been displeased with our choices of leadership at times (Hosea 8:4). The evidence of sin’s grip on this world is everywhere. Much of the suffering on earth is because of godless leadership (Proverbs 28:12). Scripture gives Christians instructions to obey legitimate authority unless it contradicts the Lord’s commands (Acts 5:27-29; Romans 13:1-7). As born-again believers, we ought to strive to choose leaders who will be themselves led by our Creator (1 Samuel 12:13-25). Candidates or proposals that violate the Bible’s commands for life, family, marriage, or faith should never be supported (Proverbs 14:34). Christians should vote as led through prayer and study of both God’s Word and the realities of the choices on the ballot.

Christians in many countries in this world are oppressed and persecuted. They suffer under governments they are powerless to change and governments that hate their faith and silence their voices. These believers preach the gospel of Jesus Christ at risk of their own lives. In the U.S.A., Christians have been blessed with the right to speak about and choose their leaders without fearing for themselves or their families. In the U.S.A., in recent elections, about 2 of every 5 of self-professed Christians took that right for granted and did not vote. About 1 in 5 self-professed, eligible Christians are not even registered to vote.

In our day and age, there are many who want to drive the name and message of Christ completely out of the public arena. Voting is an opportunity to promote, protect, and preserve godly government. Passing up that opportunity means letting those who would denigrate the name of Christ have their way in our lives. The leaders we elect—or do nothing to remove—have great influence on our freedoms. They can choose to protect our right to worship and spread the gospel, or they can restrict those rights. They can lead our nation toward righteousness or toward moral disaster. As Christians, we should stand up and follow our command to fulfill our civic duties (Matthew 22:21).

Why I’m Supporting Bob Vander Plaats for Iowa Governor

I wholeheartedly support Bob Vander Plaats for Iowa Governor because I believe Bob has the passion and drive to stand up for his principles and not compromise his values.

It was difficult choosing between Bob and Rod Roberts. My wife and I sat with Rod at the fall 2009 Dubuque County Republican Party dinner. We had a great conversation.

I literally could have gone either way. Both Bob and Rod know and speak intelligently about the U.S. Constitution, enumerated powers, states’ rights, etc. Could a Vander Plaats/Roberts ticket be in our future?

What finally sealed the deal was visiting with Bob at a small event in Dubuque and watching the gubernatorial debates. Bob has visible passion, energy and enthusiasm for life. I could tell by watching and listening to him that his freedom movement principles and values are authentic; not contrived or phony.

Bob talks about not only cutting taxes but cutting spending as well. Shrinking government in our lives is important to me and everyone in the freedom movement.

His experience as president and CEO in the private sector, as an educator and school administrator, and his turnaround of a non-profit organization leads me to believe he can use the same free market principles to lead Iowa.

I believe he understands government’s limited powers and how private, non-profit organizations including local churches can play a leading role in providing a hand up rather than government hand outs. I trust he will cut state programs that make it too easy to remain on the public dole.

I had the privilege to work for a man much like Bob – a coach, a businessman, a leader. People with the ability to truly lead others are few and far between in this world. When you meet them and are inspired by them you become a better person.

I believe Bob is this kind of person. He will not compromise with liberals in the legislature but rather he will educate them, inspire them, motivate them, and lead them to his ideas.

The fact that Bob has not held public office is a good thing in my book. He doesn’t have people in the legislature to whom he owes favors. He hasn’t made alliances with anyone. He is a fresh slate ready to take action in Des Moines and across Iowa.

Win, lose or draw next Tuesday Bob has run a positive, upbeat campaign. He has inspired many to look to the private sector for solutions. He is a strong Christian who believes in the rule of law and knows (unlike our liberal senator Tom Harkin) that our rights come from God; not the government.

I hope if you are still undecided my words here may inspire you to support Bob Vander Plaats for Iowa governor.
